5th WTO Ministerial Conference PDF Print E-mail

The IICG participated and organized a forum in the People’s Alternative Forum; a parallel civil society event during the 5th WTO Ministerial Conference organized by the global anti-WTO coalition, Our World is Not for Sale (OWINFS). Held at the Hotel Margaritas in downtown Cancun, Mexico, the forum on TNCs, Trade and Corruption was held on September 11, 2003 from 2:00-5:00 PM.

Speakers include Teodoro Casiño of PlunderWatch, Philippines, Steven Staples of Polaris Institute, and Antonio Tujan, Jr. Alejandro Bendaña and others from the Latin American network were also invited but could not make it because of visa problems. The IICG forum was one of the most well attended events at the Hotel Margaritas. It almost filled the 100 person capacity room in the hotel. Participants include official and non-official delegates of the 5th WTO Ministerial from the Philippines, Guatemala, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, US

Casino talked about the role of corruption in TNCs and Trade Policies. While Steven Staples of Polaris gave a presentation on how the new round of negotiations within the WTO and the War on Terror are being used to build alliances and acceptance for the globalization of corporate and military hegemony through the use of state security policies and security spending to achieve non-security goals such as propping up the ailing economy and subsidizing the industrial and high-tech corporate sectors (including information technologies, aerospace and defense).
